Lipomas are fatty lumps that grow under the skin and might be found anywhere in the body. They feel soft and can range in size from a few millimetres to a few centimetres.
They can sometimes cause pain and may be unsightly.
Treatment is surgical excision which is usually performed under local anaesthesia. Large lipomas may require removal under general anaesthesia.
Sebaceous or Epidermoid Cysts are fluid-filled lumps that grow under the skin near hair follicles. They are typically found in hair-bearing areas of the body. Similar to lipomas, cysts can range in size from a few millimetres to a few centimetres.
They are prone to infection which makes them swell and become tender.
Treatment is by drainage at the time of acute infection, or by surgical excision which is usually performed under local anaesthesia.
Furuncles are boils that arise from an infection in a hair follicle.
Carbuncles are a cluster of furuncles.
